Job Description

Levin Eye Care is a growing Eye Care (Optometry, Ophthalmology and Optical) company seeking a seasoned Chief Merchandising Officer (CMO) to be the right hand and direct report of our COO.  The Chief Merchandising Officer will ensure that products appear in the right store, at the right time and in the right quantities. This involves working closely with buying teams to accurately forecast trends, plan stock levels and monitor performance. The Merchandiser will decide how much money should be spent, how many lines should be bought, and in what quantities. This position will be responsible for both buying and merchandising. This is a key role within our organization, as profits are affected by how successfully they undertake their role.

Objectives of this Role

  • Collaborate with the COO in setting and driving organizational vision, operational strategy and meeting benchmarks
  • Meet and exceed sales goals by maximizing profits
  • Drive the marketing and BRANDING strategies for the organization with the goal of being bigger and better than the competition both locally and in national markets
  • Work closely with Marketing Director to widen and enrich the LEC brand
  • Create strategies around new product launches
  • Operate independently and supervise others when required
  • Ensure organization functions at its highest level to cultivate customer satisfaction across all markets
  • Adhere to company, federal, state, and local business requirements, enforcing compliance
  • Oversight and development of Inventory Control Systems

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities

  • Planning product ranges and preparing sales and stock plans in conjunction with buyers
  • Liaising with buyers, stores, suppliers and distributors while satisfying management and investors
  • Maintaining a comprehensive library of appropriate data; organized and available as needed
  • Working closely with visual display staff and department heads to decide how boards/ stores should be displayed to maximize sales
  • Producing layout plans for stores (Boards)
  • Forecasting profits and sales, and optimizing the sales volume and profitability of designated product areas
  • Planning budgets and presenting sales forecasts and figures
  • Working within allotted/ planned budgets
  • Controlling stock levels based on forecasts for the seasons
  • Using specialist computer software, for example to handle sales statistics, produce sales projections and present spreadsheets and graphs
  • Analyzing every aspect of bestsellers (for example, the bestselling price points, colors or styles) and ensuring that they reach their full potential
  • Maintaining awareness of competitors’ performance both at the local and national level
  • Monitoring slow sellers and taking action to reduce prices or set promotions as necessary
  • Gathering information on employee and customers’ reactions to products
  • Analyzing the previous season’s sales and reporting on the current season’s lines
  • Making financial presentations to senior managers
  • Understand and be familiar with vendors and manufacturers to appreciate and be able to articulate the production processes
  • Meeting with suppliers/ vendors and managing the distribution of stock, by negotiating cost prices, ordering stock, agreeing timescales and delivery dates and completing the necessary paperwork
  • Identifying production and supply difficulties and dealing with any problems or delays professional and efficiently as they arise
  • Managing, training and supervising junior staff on sales initiatives
  • Monitor and establish protocols for asset loss (i.e. theft, waste)

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or greater in Business Administration, Finance or related field
  • 5+ years’ experience in Eye Care Industry
  • 5-10 years’ experience with Supply Chain Management
  • Strong analytical & numerical skills to create and work with budgets and understand sales figures
  • Ability to work under pressure in a dynamic environment and to quickly identify problems and recommend solutions
  • Sound decision-making skills and the ability to plan and prioritize
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, listening skills and strong negotiation skills
  • Capacity to work well as part of a team and to build and maintain effective working relationships with a broad range of people
  • Strong sales acumen and the ability to understand what will appeal to customers
  • Computer literacy
  • Creative flair
  • Self-confidence, independent, self-motivation
  • Proven leadership skills, with steadfast resolve and personal integrity

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Business or related field
  • Accounting/ Finance background preferred
  • Sales and Marketing background preferred
  • 10+ years’ experience in Eyecare operations
  • Six Sigma Certification or other process improvement training
  • Familiar with the most up to date technologies and innovations regarding shopper analytics (i.e. heatmapping; time and location tracking)
