Hollins Market
Baltimore / Hollins Market
Experience a Neighborhood Full of Unique History in the Heart of the City
The historic Hollins Market neighborhood is getting a refresh.
Opportunity
Our projects are part of an overarching vision for the revitalization of the greater community. The historic Hollins Market is at the epicenter of this project - connecting historic neighborhoods like Union Square and Pigtown with the University of Maryland, Baltimore and over 1,000 UMBio Park employees – bringing a vital amenity that will attract students, workers and resident populations throughout the day.
Approach
This project plan will address public safety and transportation issues, such as street lighting, plantings and trees, sidewalks, crosswalks, and wayfinding. Additionally, we are modernizing surrounding housing and retail space, our goal being a strengthened mixed-income community. We will do this by providing moderately-priced/market rate housing to create more opportunities for middle income homeownership, as well as creating new opportunities for office space as well as live/work housing.
Results
The revitalized Hollins Market community aspires to be a place that reflects its historical diversity. It will be where people will come to socialize, eat, drink, and enjoy seasonal entertainment options. The retail spaces will be a mix of service-oriented options, such as a pharmacy, as well as restaurants and maker spaces for artists and craftspeople to make and sell their products. A focus of the redevelopment will be the creation of a vibrant outdoor gathering space that could become the ‘front porch’ for the community. Neighborhood gatherings and planned events such as movies and concerts will be organized in the re-envisioned space, which will function as Hollins Square.
