Reinvigorating the Tenderloin with a Pop-Up Food Hall
The Hall SF popped up and transformed a long-vacant billiards hall
into a place that creates and nourishes a community.
Opportunity
As the WeWork building and other tech businesses began making a home in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district, we saw the need for a simple gathering place where people could come together to share great food, live entertainment, and common ground.
Approach
We believe disused spaces hold potential. We purposely found a long-vacant building to host San Francisco’s first pop-up community food hall. In this old Hollywood billiards hall, we provided food stalls for some of the city’s most popular food truck entrepreneurs to serve their unique, affordable options to hungry residents. We also added communal seating and a stage for talks, meetings, and live performances. Respecting the building’s rich history, we designed around the existing architecture and left the bones of the structure almost as they were when we found them.
Results
The Hall SF has given the Tenderloin district a much needed way to connecting everyone in the community. The Tenderloin has undergone a vast transformation into an up-and-coming destination, and businesses like Twitter, Uber, and Dolby are flocking to the neighborhood. Today, people from all over the city gather here to converse, collaborate, and experience a true sense of community.
